The National Parenting Initiative
On the 11th of January, over 200 people gathered at Holy Trinity Brompton in London to launch the National Parenting Initiative (NPI), chaired by Ken Costa, to church leaders. The issue of parenting has recently come to the forefront of the UK media with events such as the riots over the summer and the Children’s Society’s ‘Good Childhood report’. Commentary from national newspapers linked the riots to England having the "worst record in family breakdown in Europe" while in his foreword to the report the Archbishop of York described the discovery of 500,000 unhappy children as “a wake-up call to us all”.
Now is the time to support parents and family life through church networks across the UK . We are working together with other main providers of parenting resources in the UK, including Care for the Family and Family Time, to encourage every church to run a parenting course in their local community. Through a new NPI website, in time every parent in the UK will be able to find a parenting course near them.
Join us on this initiative, which aims to support and equip all parents. Consider running The Parenting Children Course and / or The Parenting Teenagers Course and inviting parents in your local community. They are easy to run with the DVDs, and, while the courses are based on Christian principles, they are designed for any parent or carer with or without a Christian faith.
The plan is for churches to launch the initiative on Mothering Sunday (Mothers’ Day), March 18th 2012, inviting parents to come on a parenting course starting after Easter. Together we can significantly impact our society by giving parents the confidence to pass on good values to their children and the practical tools to improve and strengthen their family life.
